Vernedale awarded first Neighborhood Matching Grant

vernedalefarms

The Vernedale Neighborhood Association has been awarded its first Neighborhood Matching Grant from the City of Charlotte.

The grant provides funding for the placement of six sign toppers at main neighborhood entrances, double-sided information cards for printing and addition Yard of the Month signage.

Vernedale residents successfully pledged enough volunteer hours to match the funding request and receive the grant without any conditions. We were the only non-HOA neighborhood to receive funds this grant cycle.

If you are a resident who pledged volunteer hours, watch your email for opportunities to join community clean ups. If you have completed activities on your own, a worksheet will be provided at the next association meeting for you to report your volunteer hours.

Sign toppers were designed with input from Vernedale residents and by a volunteer resident. This project is truly a community effort, and the Board thanks everyone who turned out to meetings and pledged hours for making it a reality!

Board sets 12-month goals at retreat

vernedalefarms

On Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, members of the Vernedale Neighborhood Association attended the Charlotte Neighborhood Board Retreat to set goals for 2022-23.

During the retreat we learned that we were the only neighborhood association that had completed all the goals previously set at the 2021-22 Neighborhood Board Retreat.

2021-22 neighborhood goals

Last year’s goals completed by the Vernedale Neighborhood Association include:

  1. Hosting three Keep Charlotte Beautiful clean ups in 12 months;
  2. Adopting bylaws, electing a board and applying for a Neighborhood Matching Grant to install sign toppers in the neighborhood;
  3. Increasing engagement and participation of neighbors in the Vernedale Neighborhood Association while telling the story of Vernedale with a new website and enhanced communications.

The Vernedale Neighborhood Association is currently the adopter of Vernedale Rd., Butterwick Ln., and Cricklewood Ln. If you are interested in participating in one of three annual Keep Charlotte Beautiful clean ups, please watch for the volunteer registration links in the monthly newsletter.

In addition, over the past year the association has hosted speakers from different parts of the city, including Councilman Matt Newton, officers from CMPD, and representatives from Code Enforcement, Hickory Grove Library, Animal Control, the Tax Assessors Office and Parks and Recreation, among others.

2022-23 neighborhood goals

This year, the Board set the following goals:

  1. Perform a study of options for the Board to cover liability issues in order to begin hosting community programs and events.
  2. Flyer the neighborhood to raise awareness of the association and create a virtual “Welcome Packet” for new neighbors.
  3. Create an action plan to request upgrades to Campbell Creek Neighborhood Park, including better pedestrian and bike access to the park from Barcliff Dr.

Campbell Creek Park receives D rating, improvement planning underway

As part of its 10-year plan, the County Parks and Recreation Department completed its evaluation of 48 neighborhood parks, assigning a letter grade based on quality.

Campbell Creek Park, located at the end of Barcliff Drive, received a D rating.

Developed between 1993 and 1997, Campbell Creek Park offers a play meadow, shelter, unpaved loop trail and playground. The main access faces the Farm Pond neighborhood, with footpath access from the Vernedale side. Parking is not provided in order to ensure use by residents in the nearby area.

Speaking at the Vernedale Neighborhood Association meeting on April 27, Capital Planning Division Director Bert Lynn and Park Operations Division Director Greg Clemmer identified two existing opportunities for improvement.

First, existing amenities could be improved or new ones added; and second, the addition of an official access point from the Vernedale neighborhood side on Barcliff Drive could be prioritized to create better connectivity for Vernedale residents.

One amenity mentioned during the April neighborhood association meeting is the addition of a dog park. Clemmer said that the idea of building a dog park at Campell Creek Park also came to their attention from the County Commissioner. He noted there are cons that come with having a dog park, mainly that dog parks may draw non-residents.

The planning process is ongoing and resident input is welcome. For more information or questions, reach out to gregory.clemmer@mecklenburgcountync.gov or bert.lynn@mecklenburgcountync.gov.
