As part of its 10-year plan, the County Parks and Recreation Department completed its evaluation of 48 neighborhood parks, assigning a letter grade based on quality.
Campbell Creek Park, located at the end of Barcliff Drive, received a D rating.
Developed between 1993 and 1997, Campbell Creek Park offers a play meadow, shelter, unpaved loop trail and playground. The main access faces the Farm Pond neighborhood, with footpath access from the Vernedale side. Parking is not provided in order to ensure use by residents in the nearby area.
Speaking at the Vernedale Neighborhood Association meeting on April 27, Capital Planning Division Director Bert Lynn and Park Operations Division Director Greg Clemmer identified two existing opportunities for improvement.
First, existing amenities could be improved or new ones added; and second, the addition of an official access point from the Vernedale neighborhood side on Barcliff Drive could be prioritized to create better connectivity for Vernedale residents.
One amenity mentioned during the April neighborhood association meeting is the addition of a dog park. Clemmer said that the idea of building a dog park at Campell Creek Park also came to their attention from the County Commissioner. He noted there are cons that come with having a dog park, mainly that dog parks may draw non-residents.
The planning process is ongoing and resident input is welcome. For more information or questions, reach out to gregory.clemmer@mecklenburgcountync.gov or bert.lynn@mecklenburgcountync.gov.
